Your air conditioner is made of many different parts. One of the parts that you need to understand is the air filter. The air filter is one of the parts of your air conditioner that you will need to interact with the most. It is important to understand this part of your HVAC system.

The Basic Function of Your Air Filter

The basic function of your air filter is to clean the environmental air that is pulled into your air conditioner, cooled, and then pushed into your home. Most air filters are made from fiberglass, although they can be made out of other materials as well. The purpose of the air filter is to trap things such as dust, pollen, mold spores, and bacteria. The air filter is primarily responsible for making sure the air you breathe is nice and clean.

The Secondary Function of the Air Filter

Your air filter also serves a variety of secondary functions as well. The secondary function of the air filter is to keep dirt out of the main system and to maintain the proper flow of air.

When the air filter gets clogged, and not enough air is able to flow through the filter, large issues can develop. Your evaporator coils can freeze and cause your unit to not cool as it should when the filter is clogged. Your filter plays an important role in keeping your entire system functioning correctly.

Cleaning the Air Filter

The air filter in your air conditioner is not made to last forever. It only lasts for so long. Over time, the filter becomes full of trapped particles. When this happens, you have two choices. If the air filter is cleanable, you will be able to take out the filter and wash it. Generally, you can just rinse the air filter with water. If necessary, use some basic soap to clean it. Set the air filter out and allow it to air dry before you put it back inside of your air conditioner. If you put the air filter back in the air conditioner when it is still wet, it could develop mold spores.

Replacing the Air Filter

Not all air filters can be cleaned. Some air filters will need to be replaced. If that is the case, just pull out the old filter and put a new one in place. Follow the directional arrows to make sure you put the air filter back in place correctly.

Keeping the air filter clean and in good shape will not only keep the air you breathe nice and clean, but it will also allow your air conditioner to function optimally as well.
